The Electric Cinema has now been back in operation for a decade, and to celebrate this significant milestone, 2016 will see the UK’s oldest working cinema host The Cinematic Time Machine, a year long season of seminal films from across the globe.
With support from the BFI, The Electric Cinema presents a journey through the history of cinema, beginning in the 1920s and running right up to the modern day.
Beginning January 2016, each month will contain films either made in or set in a different decade, ranging from major releases to arthouse classics.
January and February 2016 are now on sale and cover both the 1920s and 1930s, featuring the FW Murnau 1927 masterpiece Sunrise, the 20s set MGM musical Singin’ In The Rain, Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 thriller The 39 Steps and a Shock & Gore screening of Tod Browning’s 1931 horror Dracula.
The year long programme will be revealed month by month, future selections including major works such as Raging Bull, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Breathless.
The Electric Cinema
The Electric in Birmingham is the UK’s oldest working cinema and is home to sofas, a bar and waiter service.
The cinema has been sympathetically restored to its early 20th century design and sites pride of place near to Grand Central Station. It is much loved by locals and is used as a wedding venue amongst other things.
There are two digital screens which show a mixture of the latest quality mainstream, independent, foreign and classic films.
