More than just the street fair – fun events for the whole community across 4 days
New events for Moseley Festival in 2019 include live music at the Sorrento Shindig, free craft workshops and art displays in Moseley Park and Pool, the Moseley Bake Off, and a Lord of the Rings-themed afternoon tea
In July, Moseley’s original community festival is coming back for its 45th year with a whole new look, focusing on music, food, and events for the whole family.
This year the festival will take place over just 4 days, which are all jam-packed with special events and activities, some of which are free to attend.
Just like Moseley, the Festival has reinvented itself several times since it first took place in 1974. Not to be confused with the Moseley Folk or Jazz, Soul and Funk festivals, it is run by a team of volunteers organising the different events, and reaching out to local businesses.
Brand new events for this year include a Moseley Bake Off competition at Maison Mayci, and the Sorrento Shindig – an afternoon and evening of live music at the Sorrento Lounge. In honour of JRR Tolkien – one of Moseley’s most famous former residents – Little Blackwood restaurant will be hosting a Lord of the Rings-themed afternoon tea.
Some events which are coming back for 2019 include Moseley’s famous street fair, which will take place on the Saturday, and the Moseley Masterteam Quiz on the Sunday.
The gates of Moseley Park and Pool, which is normally only open to members, will be thrown open this year on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday for a series of free art events, workshops, music and dance performances, and a sports day.
Highlights of this year’s festival include:
- Thursday 4 July – Yonder Brewing and Blending at The Dark Horse; Open Mic Night at Bohemian; Moselele at The Prince of Wales
- Friday 5 July – Midsummer Picnic in Moseley Park & Pool, including a free headdress making workshop, and a special performance by Birmingham Opera; live music at both the Dark Horse and Prince of Wales; Moseley Brunch Menu at Little Blackwood
- Saturday 6 July – Street Fair in the village centre all day; the Sorrento Shindig with live acts and DJ sets in the Sorrento Lounge from 1pm onwards; mini bunting workshops for families at Guthrie & Ghani (pre-booking required and available now); Lord of the Rings-themed afternoon tea at Little Blackwood
- Sunday 7 July – Sports Day in Moseley Park & Pool; Moseley Bake-Off at Maison Mayci, Moseley Masterteam Quiz
Anne Cummins, Chair of the Moseley Festival organising committee, said:
In the festival’s 45th year, we wanted to do something a bit different, and there are so many exciting events on offer for people who live in Moseley, and those travelling from further afield.
We’ve tried to focus on what the festival’s all about – celebrating the amazing, diverse community in Moseley, including putting on some events and activities that are free for everyone to attend.
There is also the opportunity for other people to be involved.
Anne added:
We rely on volunteers to organise the festival every year, and are looking for some extra people to help us steward the events on the village green and in Moseley Park and Pool. We would love to hear from anyone interested in helping out.
We will be looking for volunteers to steward the Street Fair in the day on Saturday 6 July, and the Moseley Park and Pool events on the afternoon and evening of Friday 5 July and Saturday 6 July. If you are interested in helping out, please contact rhiannon@moseleyexchange.com
