Going Christmas shopping can be incredibly stressful; in fact, a study has shown that in 88% of people it raises the heart rate, by 33% – enough to cause a heart attack! All that running around is certainly no good for us, especially during the festive season. Rather, we need to improve the shopping experience in a relaxing way. This year, instead of hitting the high street shops in a panic on Christmas Eve, how about visiting one of Birmingham’s amazing Christmas markets? You can shop for beautiful gifts in a leisurely way, sampling a glass of mulled wine and truly enjoy the holiday atmosphere.
Ice Skate Birmingham
Back by popular demand, Ice Skate Birmingham opens for business on 7th November. It isn’t just a place that you can zoom around the rink; you can also enjoy the stalls offering festive fare, from mulled wine to mince pies. The moving lighting and LED effects give the ice rink an amazing atmosphere. It makes it feel like you are at a wonderful Christmas party disco with festive snowflake illuminations. You can shop for some Christmas gifts, enjoy a meal with family and then skate off the calories afterwards.
Frankfurt Christmas Market
The arrival of the Frankfurt Christmas Market really marks the start of the festive season for Birmingham. It is open from 10am – 9pm everyday from 7th November. Located at Victoria Square, New Street, the market is home to more than 80 stalls, as well as a bandstand for some traditional German ‘oompah’ music. If you are a festive foodie, then check on the schnitzels, bratwurst, weiss beer and pretzels. At the market, you can pick up some wonderful traditional, handmade gifts that are plastic free. There are toys, glass baubles, leather goods, and some beautiful Christmas jewellery, all made with pride. The market is a unique shopping experience with an atmosphere of joy.
Cathedral Craft Market
Birmingham Cathedral on Colmore Row hosts a large craft market in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The covered grotto is a great place to take the little ones to see Father Christmas and they will also love seeing one of the biggest Christmas trees in Birmingham. At the craft market you can buy some wonderful local produce to fill your pantry and plenty of handmade gifts. You will be able to find something that is completely unique and special for your friends and family.
Shopping doesn’t have to be a stressful! Visit one of Birmingham’s markets instead and you can be entertained, find some delicious food and drink, and some truly original presents.
