An Award Winning Year for The Night Owl

Soul and retro club The Night Owl has celebrated a successful 2019 with multiple awards for their contributions to Birmingham’s ever evolving nightlife scene. These accolades come after the club, based on Lower Trinity Street, Digbeth, has expanded its musical repertoire to host even more exciting live music events and club nights.

The first award The Night Owl received was in May, securing ‘Best Club Night’ at the Birmingham Music Awards (BMA’s). The Night Owl was nominated for its monthly club night Le Freak, winning against the likes of Sum Cellar, MOHO, Uprawr and Big Wednesdays at Snobs.

Le Freak, orchestrated by both The Night Owl and Bread Birmingham, is The Night Owl’s monthly disco, funk and soul party, taking revellers back to the days of the 1970s and 80s when disco reigned supreme. Guests often queue around the block to dance under the mirror ball, strutting their stuff whilst the best DJs in town play the likes of Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Rick James and Grace Jones. Taking inspiration from the hit TV shows, The Night Owl host ‘Soul Train’ and ‘The Get Down’ inspired dance offs at Le Freak: Soul Train Special and Le Freak: The Get Down respectively. These competitions put Le Freak on the map, creating a vibrant, safe and entertaining night for disco lovers.

Whilst the first award was for the magic that takes place under the mirror ball, the second celebrated the genius creations behind the bar. In September The Night Owl were awarded ‘Brum’s Best Cocktail’ in the Independent Birmingham Awards for their Strawberry Fields’ cocktail. The Night Owl has become well known around Birmingham for their one of a kind cocktails, with a bespoke menu inspired by soul and retro records. This cocktail, made by Assistant Manager Jessie Scutts, is one of the most popular on the menu, named after the iconic song by The Beatles. Along with their regular cocktail menu, The Night Owl create unique and limited edition cocktails for bigger events such as Pulp Killers: A Tarantino Halloween Party along with their Bowie and Prince tribute nights.

These awards are only part of the success the independently ran club has seen this year. The Night Owl has recently hosted their first bottomless brunches, featuring local street food traders and the best DJs. They have also hosted their first ever festival Owlstock, celebrating 50 years of Woodstock with Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and Janis Joplin tributes. In the late summer, original Oasis member Tony McCaroll drummed on stage alongside tribute Oasis Maybe, celebrating 25 years of the album ‘Definitely Maybe’ – this is believed to be the first time Tony McCaroll played live in over 20 years. Seeing out the year, The Night Owl are hosting the official Happy Mondays After Party with Bez and Rowetta performing, before ringing in the New Year with a host of much loved Night Owl DJs on New Year’s Eve.
