| RE-OPENING EXHIBITION THE WRITING OF STONES Gin Rimmington Jones We are delighted to have been able to welcome people back to the gallery this September, re-opening with an incredible solo show for photographic artist Gin Rimmington Jones. After the hiatus of the last few months, this exhibition of black and white photographs of a remote area of Spain speaks to the appreciation of, and perhaps intensified relationship with, the natural world and suspension of time. This striking body of work is the result of two artist residencies at Joya-AiR, Almeria, Spain in 2019 and 2020 where Rimmington Jones photographed the hot, bone-white terrain of the imposing marble quarries and deserted, dry-baked gorge of the Los Gasquez region. Working daily in quiet solitude she felt as though she “had been walking with the soul of the earth where the solemnity of these lithic spaces puts the brevity of our human season into context.” See here for our on-line exhibition of this stunning work and watch Gin give a short talk about it here On the lower ground floor of the gallery, we’re showing Somewhere among us a stone is taking notes. Produced over a period of years in Cornwall, this complementary body of work is a precursor to The Writing of Stones and gives an insight into Rimmington Jones’s fascination with stones. “I have collected stones my whole life, as if in their weight and density the curvature of time is made manifest. When you hold a stone it is as if you are holding time.” Prints for both series are available to purchase. PAUL HILL In July we were thrilled to be able to add to the print room a selection of vintage, rare and later prints by renowned photographer Paul Hill. A true icon of British photography, Paul Hill began his career in the 1960s as an award-winning photojournalist in the West Midlands before moving towards a fine art practice in the 1970s. Since then he focused on the theatrical aspects of ordinary activities, transforming his subjects into artistic abstraction. Lyrical but unsentimental, his compositions evince a modernist interest in form but also hold mysterious meanings and hidden symbolism common to Surrealism. This ability to transform everyday encounters into something monumental established Hill as one of the most important figures in 20th century British photography. UPCOMING EXHIBITION WAVELENGTHS Melanie King Wavelengths is an exhibition of analogue Infrared photographs of the Finnish and UK landscape together with black and white photographs of the night sky that explores the human relationship and interconnectedness with the natural world. The exhibition opens Thursday, 5th November at midday until 6pm. There is no need to book, but please email your intention to attend to help us manage the flow of visitors.
