A recent rail survey revealed that almost half the participants were unaware that travelling by train is more sustainable than any other form of transport. As well as being more environmentally-friendly, train travel is a relaxing and enjoyable way to see more of the picturesque countryside and explore some of the UK’s best towns and cities. While the cost of train travel has risen, recent offers of half price fares and the benefits of buying multiple tickets for the same journey can offer considerable savings. With so many great destinations less than an hour’s ride from Birmingham’s New Street Station, it’s easy to jump on a train and experience a travel adventure on a day trip away from the city.
A Wealth of History in Worcester
According to research by a leading train operating company, rail passengers voted the route from Birmingham to Bristol as one of the most scenic train journeys in the country because of its changing and contrasting views. The journey begins by running alongside picturesque canals, and striking views of the University of Birmingham are revealed before the train passes through the beautiful Worcestershire countryside. With stops at Bromsgrove and Droitwich Spa along the way, passengers can take advantage of split ticketing to save money on their fares before alighting in the county seat of Worcester. As one of the oldest cities in the country, visitors will not be disappointed by the wealth of historic sights on offer. As well as attractions including The Commandery, a unique civil war museum, and the impressive cathedral, visitors to the city can enjoy picturesque walks along the banks of the River Severn.
Independent Shops in Shrewsbury
Further upstream in Shropshire, lies the town of Shrewsbury, known for its striking half-timbered tudor buildings. It is also a popular destination for shopping and is home to what is believed to be the country’s longest continuous stretch of independent retailers. Having been voted as Britain’s Favourite Market in 2018, the indoor market offers a range of stalls from traditional fresh fruit and vegetables to vintage goods. The town square also hosts a popular Farmers’ Market on the first Friday of the month where visitors can purchase local Shropshire products from handmade pottery to homemade preserves.
Cultural Festivals in Leamington Spa
With its distinctive Regency architecture and wide boulevards, the town of Leamington Spa is very different to Birmingham and yet is only just over half an hour away by train. A day trip is easily filled with cultural activities from a visit to the art gallery housed in the Royal Pump Rooms to attending one of several free festivals held throughout the year in the Pump Room Gardens. Held in September, the two-day Food and Drink Festival with around 110 exhibitors attracts over 25,000 visitors.
As a major rail hub, Birmingham is a great place from which to visit surrounding towns and cities by train. Short journeys through beautiful countryside take travellers to picturesque and historic towns where they can enjoy a great day out.
