Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, December 2024 – After months of restoration and care, the iconic Lord Clifden pub in Birmingham’s vibrant Jewellery Quarter is reopening its doors to the public. Under the stewardship of new General Manager Will Young, the pub promises to bring back the warm, welcoming atmosphere that has made it a beloved fixture of the local community.
The Lord Clifden, which has long been a cornerstone of the area’s nightlife, has undergone a thoughtful restoration that blends the pub’s rich history with modern touches, creating a space that celebrates both the past and the future. The renovation has restored the pub’s charming character while enhancing its inviting ambiance, making it the perfect place for both old friends and new visitors to gather and relax.
“We’re thrilled to reopen the Lord Clifden and offer a space where the community can once again come together, whether for a quiet pint, a lively evening, or a memorable meal,” said Will Young, the new General Manager. “My team and I have worked hard to ensure the pub retains the warmth and charm it’s always been known for, but with a fresh approach to make sure everyone feels welcome—whether you’re here for a quick drink or a long evening of conversation and of course maybe the odd football game too. We had so many good memories of the place before and we wanted to bring a little of that back, even moving the toilets back downstairs which meant a lot to people”
Will, who has championed real ale and good quality beer in his previous roles as manager of both the Woodman in Digbeth and also the highly acclaimed Wellington in the city centre added, “Good food and beer is at the heart of everything we are going to try and do, the festive menu will kick us off in terms of food and then a new menu will come out in January and we are also going to be looking for the best beers we can find, both from the great local suppliers that we have around Birmingham and also the best of what the rest of the UK has to offer. We had hoped to be open 6 weeks ago but the refurbishment of such a well regarded and important pub takes time so we are going to continue to develop everything, both the building and offering, it will be worth it though but we really wanted to be open before Christmas to give everyone a chance to see what they’d been missing!”
In addition to the traditional comforts of the pub, the newly renovated Lord Clifden will offer an updated menu featuring locally sourced ingredients, independent craft beers, and an excellent selection of spirits, including a carefully curated cocktail list. The pub’s signature events, which include music, quiz nights, and sporting events, will also be returning to keep the atmosphere lively and engaging.
The opening weekend will feature a Festive Food Menu with turkey dishes and a warming comforting Christmas menu alongside an array of sports, including the football and darts on across a number of screens throughout the pub and even in the legendary garden. One of the DJ’s from the Lord Clifden’s much vaunted history, Lee Bibb, will be on the decks providing chilled out sounds until the smaller hours over the weekend.
“We want the Lord Clifden to be a place where memories are made—whether it’s catching up with friends over a pint, celebrating a special occasion, or simply enjoying a great evening out,” said Young. “Our goal is to ensure that everyone who walks through our doors feels like they belong, and we can’t wait to share this special space with the people of Birmingham once again.”
The reopening of the Lord Clifden marks an exciting new chapter for the pub, which has been a staple of the Jewellery Quarter for years. Guests are invited to join in the celebration over Christmas and the New Year period.
