With Americans recently being told to “Forget London… visit Birmingham” instead, this second accolade from the U.S.A. media, citing the city as an alternative to London comes as no surprise to the Brummie natives. Birmingham has a great deal of culture going on right now, and a big part of that is the music scene. Here’s just a taste of some of the great music events going on in the city this November – Enjoy!
Alice Russell, Lumi HD + Sam Redmore (DJ Set)
Venue: Hare & Hounds
Wed 20th Nov

Alice Russell is natural, pure natural talent, a natural presence, a force of nature. Whether on a big stage with her 16 piece band, charming a crowd of 4000 into staying out dancing in the rain (as she did at Montreal Jazz Festival) or rocking out an intimate club set with a stripped down six piece band, she’s a singer who demands attention.
Unfazed by taking to the spotlight after a sober Amy Winehouse or joining Roy Ayers live for ‘Everybody Loves The Sunshine’, there’s no wonder her powerful soul voice has attracted rave reviews from numerous national and international publications and praise from fans as diverse as Gilles Peterson, David Byrne, Dennis Coffey, Massive Attack’s Daddy G, and Groove Armada.

The Pimptones’ sound is a funky soul stew of phat grooves and beefy breaks. Their slick arrangements have all the harmonic sophistication that the jazz cats love, delivered with a heavyweight punch that keeps the dance floor moving.
Their live show kicks off with tight, punchy instrumentals, making way to sweetly crafted soul music as they are joined onstage by one of many fantastic guest vocalists. The band formed in 2007 in the North East of England. Led by guitarist, composer, arranger and producer Nick Pride, they went on to sign for Record Kicks and now perform across Europe.
The Yardbird will be a perfect venue for this well established funk band, low lights, cool crowd and a chilled vibe with great support DJs.

STORNOWAY + SIVU + GOODNIGHT LENIN
Venue: The Institute
Sun 24 Nov
http://birminghampromoters.com/Events/stornoway/
https://www.facebook.com/stornoway
Fresh from releasing their highly acclaimed second album Tales From Tera Firma, and concluding their spring headline tour, Oxford’s finest Stornoway have announced their return to the road this winter for a run of dates during November and December including Birmingham’s The Institute.
It starts with a breathless, brimming affirmation of enduring love and ends with a becalmed reflection on life and loss as dusk draws in. Between these two elemental bookends Stornoway’s superb second album pauses to contemplate birth, death, family, sex, nature, joy, pain and the precise location of home. There are Turkish zithers and there are German spoons. It is the sound of one long song of life unfurling.
