Grapevine was recently invited a very special open day at Dig Brew Co. where the guys at Beer Central Festival had gathered together some of the region’s best small craft ale brewers, to create a very special brew, available at the forthcoming Beer Central festival to be held at The Bond on the 5th and 6th July 2019.
The day was a fascinating insight into the lengthy process of brewing beer, a lot of cleaning, measuring, monitoring, patience and elbow grease is required.
Beer Central is taking place at The Bond in Digbeth which is a fab venue with covered warehouse space, open air yard and canal basin. There will be a weekend of music, DJs, beer stalls, and street food. The big difference with Beer Central is the entrance fee covers the cost of your drinks, meaning you can sample away all day and not have to worry about watching your purse strings.
We caught up with event organiser Greg Wells and asked him to write some words on what Beer Central is about, the special brew, and what visitors to the event can expect.
A Word from Greg Wells
Festival
We’ve worked all around the country, since the beer revolution kicked off in 2012/13. Our events are always about championing the highest quality, most creative young breweries out there. It’s the dynamic ones doing it differently we love.
We also wanted to shake the boring old beer festival – a flatulent scented village affair, with an ageing male demographic adorned with misogynistic t shirts.
Birmingham and The Midlands at large has been accused of being behind the curve on this new beer revolution, but its changing and it’s changing fast. The whole country couldn’t be more excited about Birmingham and the midlands with regard to food and drink. It that unassuming way things are done here, a quiet revolution is under foot and we hope we can our own small part in blowing the fucking roof off it.
We’re working day and night to put on something cool – I mean Verdant, Cloudwater, Dj Yoda, Kaiser Chiefs DJ, Brad Carter cheffing – what more could anyone who loves good times and great food and drink want?
We hope Birmingham’s scene – those who like good cultural happenings – vote with their feet and come down and we’ll mae it a real party, grow it each year so it’s totally unmissable for all the pleasure seeking gourmands out there.
Beer
We like to create a unique, one-off celebratory beer for the festival. Something that encapsulates what we’re about. We thought bringing some of the central regions best young breweries together to make a crushable summer beer, packed with beautiful hops would be perfect.
To make it a stones throw from our venue with our 2019 Raise The Bar winner’s Dig Brew is perfect. We were joined by legends in the game Purity, and two hot properties, Burning Soul and Twisted Barrel from Coventry.
The beer will get national distribution, be available all good beer shops around the city AND at the festival.
