Artists and creators of all ages are being asked to donate a piece of art that will help to raise awareness and funds in order to save Birmingham’s ‘Jewellers Church’ which is at risk from catastrophic damage caused by flooding.
From chocolatiers to wordsmiths, painters to photographers, whatever the medium and format, Create to Donate is a campaign that aims to bring talented people together in order to raise the £660,000 needed to save the roof on the Grade I listed St Paul’s Church.
The iconic church, which sits at the heart of Birmingham’s vibrant jewellery quarter, is no longer watertight and it is only a matter of time before the structure and contents are irreparably damaged and the church will be forced to close for good.
David Bloxham from BHP Collectibles says: “St Paul’s is such a huge part of Birmingham’s cultural and artistic landscape and has featured in sketches by Joseph Mallord William Turner and holds an original glass painting by Francis Eginton.
“As a result, we wanted to celebrate the creative community in which it sits and the artists that have been inspired to photograph, sculpt, paint and wax lyrical about it over the 250 years since it was built. Through the Create to Donate campaign – part of the Raise the Roof fundraiser – we are asking creative people from 4-104 years old to submit a piece of work that can be printed out or easily exhibited which will then be sold at a special exhibition. The only catch is that that piece of artwork must reference the church in some way.”
Creatives have until 31 January 2024 to submit an entry. Go to www.stpaulsjq.church/events for details or if you would like to make a donation, visit www.stpaulsjq.church/raise-the-roof or follow the progress of the appeal on social media via #RaisetheRoofStPauls.
