David Shrigley to open RBSA Annual Exhibition

RBSA Gallery to welcome Turner Prize nominated artist David Shrigley OBE

to open Annual Exhibition

The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists is delighted to announce that David Shrigley OBE will be in attendance at its Gallery for the Private View of the RBSA Annual Exhibition on Thursday 14 November from 6-8pm.

David Shrigley OBE is a British visual artist who first came to prominence in the 1990s for his distinct line drawings. Alongside his illustration work, Shrigley is also a noted painter, sculptor, filmmaker, and photographer. Shrigley was nominated for the Turner Prize 2013 for his solo exhibition at Hayward Gallery, David Shrigley: Brain Activity.

David Shrigley will be opening the RBSA Annual Exhibition on Thursday 14 November at 7pm. As the RBSA’s flagship show, the Annual Exhibition is a showcase of artwork by its Membership and the work on display explores both contemporary and traditional approaches and covers a wide variety of media. The tradition of the Annual Exhibition dates back to 1827 and, with the exception of 1940, 1941, and 2020, has taken place every year since. This will be the 24th Annual Exhibition held in the RBSA’s current Brook Street premises and the third since the refurbishment of the Gallery in 2022.

The artists exhibiting this year range in age and experience, and the Membership welcomes those who have followed an artistic education as well as those who are self-taught. Indeed, some of the current Membership came to their artistic practice, and to the RBSA, following careers in industries not related to the arts. Every two years, the RBSA Graduate Artist scheme encourages emerging young artists to join the Membership, and many of the class of 2023 have work in this show. Not only does this ensure the future of the Society and help to keep it relevant, but it also adds further diversity to the scope of artistic practices within the RBSA Membership.

The exhibition runs from 14 November 2024 – 4 January 2025
