It’s a full on month of Brummie basslines and live bands this August, with so much original talent, taking in all music genres… Dig in and get involved.
If you love Northern Soul.. ANGELO STARR & THE TEAM play the Night Owl in Digbeth on the 1st of August. Edwin Starr’s original 8 piece band who backed Edwin on all his shows are still intact. The late great Edwin Starr’s brother is the original musical director of The Team. He has now taken over lead vocals performing all the fantastic Edwin Starr classics, plus dynamic performances of some great Motown & Soul covers plus current chart hits.
The Mockingbird Bistro, Bar and Theatre Relaunch is happening on the 6th August! They’ll be showcasing some samples of the food to come. It’s the guys behind street food combo ‘Big Papa’s’. Expect a seasonally evolving, locally sourced bistro, large craft beer selection, independent spirits, lesser known quality wines and fizz, a unique interior, DJs playing soul, funk and some very alternative music, cult favourite and independent cinema in the 100 seat theatre, live music acts, big name comedy acts and much more.
For those into psychedelic indie vibes, the Sunflower Lounge will host Brummie troubadours SKY CHILDREN on the 12th. Combining warped tunes out of comforting head trips and awesome helter skelter choruses. Support comes from GLEAM, the Birmingham shoegaze quartet, who are already gaining widespread attention, including praise from the NME.
Freestyle presents JAZZIE B (SOUL II SOUL) at The Hare & Hounds on Friday 14th with support from the amazing local songstress KEZIA SOUL (Live) and SAM REDMORE (DJ Set – As featured on Grapevine Radio).
Fri 28 Aug, The Rainbow Courtyard hosts the haunting bluesy folk sounds of RYLEY WALKER. A reincarnation of the True American Guitar Player, that’s as much a testament to his roving, rambling ways, or as to the fact that his Guild D-35 guitar has endured a few stints in the pawnshop. The band is a mixture of new and old Chicago talent, blending both jaded veterans of the post-rock and jazz mini-circuits together with a few eager, open-eared youths. Support is from the equally talented local folksters BOAT TO ROW.
The Great Outdoors
The Great Outdoors bank holiday special takes place at the Lord Clifden on Aug 29th. Based in Stockholm since the late 1990s, British-born MARK SEVEN began his obsession with the dance at now vaunted London parties such as Delirium, to a soundtrack of Soul, Funk, and Hip Hop. As Acid House took root in the capital Mark became a regular at the similarly hallowed Future and Shoom and started organizing his own events. Support comes from equally qualified residents: Dean ‘Sunshine’ Smith,Rob J and Stu Robinson.
A Reggae SOUND SYSTEM CULTURE EXHIBITION, documenting Birmingham’s rich history of reggae sound systems, through photographs, audio recordings, archive film footage and other memorabilia takes place at The Drum, Aston (6th Aug to 7th Sep).
Other highlights on Birmingham’s What’s On musical calender include live music at both the Sun at The Station and Sun on The Hill every Sunday (indie & disco DJs on Friday and Saturdays), a superb Hip Hop event at the Hare & Hounds featuring A FEW GOOD MEN reunion with Slum Village, Roc One, Rhize & E Double D (Aug 7th), rooftop parties at the Bureau, Project Soundlounge youth led music festival also kicking off on Aug 7th and a DJ set by northern disco king GREG WILSON at the Hare & Hounds on the 30th.
