A specialist cakemaker is celebrating sweet success after scooping the Cake Designer of the Year title at the 2024 Britain’s Asian Wedding Awards.
Luci Campbell from the Juci Luci Cake Company based in Solihull had previously won two awards at the Midlands Asian Wedding Awards in 2017 and 2019 before taking the prize at this year’s national event hosted in Birmingham by broadcaster Tommy Sandhu.
The latest accolade comes as the 56-year-old, originally from South London, marks 15 years of her business in 2024.
Luci produces over 100 exquisite and intricate bespoke creations for Sikh, Muslim, and Hindu weddings each year, and has made sweet treats for high-profile celebrities, as well as corporate cupcakes for major clients including Birmingham Airport, Coventry City Council, and BBC Asian Network.
The annual Britain’s Asian Wedding Awards, organised by Oceanic Consulting, features 23 categories celebrating the small business wedding suppliers who work tirelessly to make weddings professional, sleek, and spectacular.
Award winners are voted for by the public, including brides and grooms, with judges reviewing supporting evidence from all nominations.
Luci, who is married to UB40 vocalist and guitarist Robin Campbell, left the entertainment business to start her own company in 2009. After receiving the award last week, Luci said:
“I’m so thrilled and delighted we won – this is a beautiful way to begin the new wedding season.
“I love my job and being part of one of the most amazing days of people’s lives is a privilege and huge responsibility that I don’t take lightly.
“We don’t get to be on the guest side of hospitality often when you’re a wedding supplier, so to attend the Britain’s Asian Wedding Awards – and win – is very much appreciated!”
After leaving school, Luci worked in theatre looking after actors like Emma Thompson, Michael Gambon, and Michael Crawford, before touring across the globe with bands including Iron Maiden, The Monkees, Squeeze, The Kinks, and UB40.
Leaving the music industry to launch a cupcake business which developed into an Asian wedding cake business, Luci learnt alongside other cake artists, studied sugarwork and invested in specialist tools to take her creativity to the next level.
“My favourite flavour of cake is my signature Chai Latte Cinnamon & Banana with Salted Caramel, baked using ingredients we all love in our house.
“It’s the favourite of all the wedding suppliers we work with. If you see that flavour at a wedding you’ll know it’s made by The Juci Luci Cake Company!
“Robin is very proud of my work and enjoys being chief cake taster. We have been together 20 years and married for four years – and yes, I did make my own wedding cake!”
The Juci Luci Cake Company has produced cakes for high-profile footballers, boxers, actors and politicians in its 15-year history, makes 2,500 corporate cupcakes every year for one corporate client, and caters to multiple markets with egg-free creations as well as regular sponge cakes.
Luci’s husband, Robin, said: “I’m immensely proud of Luci’s achievements – especially the latest British Asian Wedding Award. Her designs and flavours are extraordinary and my waistline is a testament to that!”
