“Swooping and captivating soundscapes and haunting vocals that pull you in with twanging guitars, and haunting strings that pulls the big sky of the wild west into the mystery of the midlands.” – Louder Than War
Following the success of their sun-dazzled 2022 EP releases, ‘Dreaming Of The Moon’ and ‘Alcatraz’, Birmingham collective SOLAR EYES bound into the spring with the psychedelic rock trippings of the ‘Naked Monkey On A Spaceship, their third wee collection of cruisingly crunchy cosmic rock anthems. To celebrate the release they head to these musical planets here and here:

Never ones to either knowingly stand still or unknowingly get their music soundtracking soccer action on the nation’s TV screens, Solar Eyes kicked off the New Year with the release of the raucously stompy EP title track and a slot at the Pandamonium! Festival at Dalston Junction. The swift follow up came with ‘Roll The Dice’, another tub-thumping call to arms in the midst of these troubled, rubbled times which was toploaded with that patended Chemical Brothers / Primal Scream mashed-up sound with the drive and swagger of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club as well as a sly nod to the sonic mysteries of Messrs Morricone and Pizzorno.
The EP fits the twangingly fuzzy model, it being a fistful of moody melodies, although slap bang in the middle they’ve dropped ‘Someone Else’, which is relatively dainty and dreamy
and light of touch. With consistent, if ever-surprising airplay support, from Sky Sports, BT Sport, BBC Match Of The Day and Birmingham City FC as well as the rather more traditonal alt.rock channels such as BBC Introducing Hereford, BBC 6 Music and The Guardian, it’s small wonder that Blues fan and frontboy Glenn Smyth should be so upbeat about his fragrantly cosmic Brum-rocking beats:
“I’ve been tinkering around with ‘Someone Else’ for years. Initially I wrote it after reading the book ‘Marching Powder’ – I’m sure Brad Pitt bought the rights to it and was going to do a film about it, so I was ready to jump in with it if needed haha…But as time went it sort of took on a life of its own, with that feeling that you’re turning into someone else, someone you’re not… going down a dark path. The path of least resistance. Blaming others and then a realisation it’s all on you.”
