“The prospect of a further layer of regulation and enforcement for the UK’s hospitality and night time industries – coupled with the potential business closures and job losses a smoking ban could result in – is incredibly concerning.
“Whilst we do not have specific details of the proposals as yet, the lack of communication and consultation between the Government and industry on this issue is, frankly, appalling.
“It is well documented that the UK’s NTE, its fifth-biggest industry, is already under an unprecedented amount of strain. Instead of responding to calls for interventions and support, the Government appears to be piling on the pressure further with this latest announcement.
“Whilst we of course welcome moves to improve public health and support the NHS’ future, the timing and nature of this announcement is very poor – particularly following on from suggestions that we will see a ‘painful’ Autumn Budget statement.
“Tackling smoking in the outside areas of NTE businesses is a complex issue that requires significant research and understanding. West Midlands and Birmingham businesses have already spent millions in adaptive measures to meet the requirements of the 2007 smoke-free workplace and public places legislation, as well as social distancing measures during Covid.
“We stand ready to work with the Government, but an improved collaborative and cooperative approach is required on their part to ensure more productive dialogue on this topic.”
