Its a real honour to have these guys come and spin for us at the Town hall and the first of many Sutton Soul Club events on the way.
RUSS WINSTANLEY
On 23rd September 1973 Our Headline DJ Russ Winstanley had the idea for putting on and DJing at the famous Soul Allnighters at Wigan Casino. Over 4 million people passed through the venue which ran four nights per week until December 6th 1981. Both Wigan Casino and Russ Winstanley won many awards for best venue and best DJ.
In 1997 Russ compiled Telstar Records northern soul album Soul Survivors which has become the biggest selling northern soul compilation ever grossing over £2m. In 1998 his book Wigan Casino Story joined the best sellers’ list.
In 2008 Russ was featured in BBC TV’s Soul Britannia and Dance Britannia and special Northern Soul features on BBC Radio 2 and 4. He has also toured with Paul Weller and Ocean Colour Scene.
NEIL RUSHTON
Also on the Bill we are delighted to have Neil Rushton. From the early 70’s his Northern Soul roots included The George Hotel in Walsall , The Catacombs in Wolverhampton, The Golden Torch in Stoke and many more .
Neil’s first promotion was at St Mary’s Ballroom in The Queen Mary Ballroom at Dudley Zoo in 1971.
He then went on to promote events incorporating Jazz Funk And Rare Soul via his Heart Of England Soul Club at venues such as Tiffanies – Coalville, The Ritz In Manchester plus Blackpool Mecca bringing together an eclectic and forward thinking music policy of Rare Soul and the brand new Modern Soul / Jazz Funk sounds and DJ’s, with many live acts like Archie Bell and The Drells, The Tavares ,Ronnie Laws,Gloria Jones ,The Moments ,The Rimshots, Edwin Starr ,Hi Tension, Kandidate And Olympic Runners.
Around this time he also penned many articles for the then new weekly magazine Black Echoes ,which he was also deputy Editor.
With his record labels like Inferno ,Kool Kat and a mail order record business Interdisc ,Neil was at the cutting edge supplying the Rare Soul and Modern Soul Scene with the best records of the time .
Neil continues to promote heavily with many quality events to his name : The Cleethorpes Soul Weekender and Detroit A Go Go ( with Phil Dick ) , The Lea Hall Catacombs All Nighter ,and many more. Its great to have Neil spinning at out event.
Also supporting on the night will be local legends and hugely respected soul spinners.

This is the first of many planned Northern / Modern Soul & Motown events for Sutton Soul Club.
