Birmingham music legends UB40 recently took some time out of their busy schedule working on a new album to pay a visit to Acorns Children’s Hospice.

Duncan and Robin Campbell popped into Acorns in Birmingham (Selly Oak) to meet staff, children and families, before having a tour with Head Nurse Lindsey Homer.

Commenting on the visit, Robin said:

With Acorns coming up to its 30th anniversary next year it seemed like the perfect opportunity to drop by. As proud Brummies we know all about the vital work Acorns does across the city so it was fantastic to visit.

What Acorns do is serious, but they do it beautifully. It’s such a special place and it’s so bright, colourful and welcoming – you can’t help but leave with a smile!

The band have a long association with Acorns, with the group contributing to a charity album in 1986 called ‘Action!’ to help raise the funds needed to build the hospice in Birmingham.

When the hospice eventually opened in 1988, it was one of the first children’s hospices in the world providing care for life limited and life threatened children and support for their families.

Acorns Head Nurse, Lindsey Homer, said: “It was such a treat to have the lads here and we were all very excited to meet them! We’re grateful to them for taking time out of recording to meet staff and families and learn more about what we do in the hospice and the local community.”

In the past year Acorns has provided care to more than 865 children and over 1,088 families, including those who are bereaved.
